Steven Shaw:

Steve is the Vermont Regional Manager for Weston & Sampson Engineers, Inc. a full service civil and environmental engineering firm with a local office in Waterbury. He is responsible for all local business operations and serves as Principal-in-Charge for the full range of practice groups operating in Vermont. Prior to his role as Regional Manager, Steve led the Vermont environmental practice group, which specializes in the assessment and remediation of underutilized properties (brownfields), often using a combination of private, municipal, state, and federal funding.

Kurt Muller, PE:

Kurt is a Site Investigation and Remediation Specialist with 20 years professional experience. As VHB-Director of the Site Investigation and Remediation in Vermont, Kurt's 20 years of engineering experience encompasses project management, environmental site assessment, PCB investigation and remediation design, site clean-up management, and stakeholder coordination and outreach. Kurt’s focus is on brownfield environmental consulting work and managing large site characterization and remediation projects. He has acted as lead project manager and Environmental Professional on more than 65 EPA-funded brownfield site investigations, dozens of municipal redevelopment efforts, 6 PCB remediation projects that required EPA/TSCA approval, and 4 large CERCLA-compliant soil management and remediation projects for the National Park Service. His experience includes preparation of work plans, site investigation reports, and Corrective Action Plans (CAPs) that address a wide variety of contaminants in a manner that is project-goal focused, and compliant with regulatory requirements.

Beth Erickson:

Beth is a senior geologist, project manager, and environmental consultant with Lincoln Applied Geology in Lincoln, where her work primarily focuses on remediation of soil and groundwater contamination and environmental due diligence work for commercial property transactions. Beth has worked in environmental consulting in Vermont since 2005. She previously worked at Heindel & Noyes in Burlington, and Environmental Compliance Services in Waterbury.

Martha Roy:

Education: Masters Degree from the University of Vermont in Natural Resources and a Bachelor Degree in Biology from St. Michaels College

Martha has worked at The Verterre Group since 2004 and has been a Principal in the organization since 2006. Her specialties are Project Management, Phase I Environmental Site Assessments, laboratory data validation, guiding clients through their environmental issues and technical report preparation and review. During non-working hours Martha enjoys spending time with her family and pets, cooking, yoga, camping, traveling and documenting her family’s heritage.

Sarah Bartlett: Joined VEC in 2017

Sarah is the Brownfields Program Coordinator for the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation, where she works with the Vermont development community to balance stakeholder needs while ensuring the protection of Vermont’s natural resources.  Sarah has nearly two decades of environmental regulatory experience, working with property owners, developers, Regional Planning Commissions and Development Corporations, municipalities, lending and real estate professionals, and other brownfield stakeholders.  Prior to her work in the public sector, Sarah started her career in environmental consulting, where her focus was on GIS based mapping.  Sarah has previously served as the Region 1 representative on the Association of State and Territorial Solid Waste Management Officials (ASTSWMO) Brownfields Focus Group. 

Jessica Bulova: Joined VEC in 2024

Jessica is a Senior Project Manager with Sanborn Head and Associates, Inc. She holds a Project Management Professional certification, and her work focuses on the investigation and remediation of contaminated sites worldwide. Jessica works closely with the University of Guelph’s Morwick G360 Groundwater Research Institute to further the understanding of contaminated bedrock environments. Previously she worked for the State of Vermont as the Wastewater Program Manager for the Watershed Division and as a Business Unit Manager and Operations Manager for a smaller environmental consulting firm.

Benjamin Dejong: Joined VEC in 2024

Ben is the Vermont State Geologist and director of the Vermont Geological Survey, whose work spans geologic mapping, detailed aquifer characterization, conceptual site model development in support of groundwater quantity and quality issues, geologic hazard identification and assessment, and Act 250 permit review, among others.  Ben joined the Survey in 2022 after 7 years in private consulting and 2 years teaching in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Norwich University.  Ben started his career at the United States Geological Survey, where he mapped coastal plain stratigraphy; the USGS supported further inquiry of long-standing stratigraphic problems during Ben’s doctoral work at UVM, which brought him to Vermont. Ben serves as the chair of the Education Committee for the Association of American State Geologists and has a special interest in supporting geoscience programming in Vermont’s education institutions.

Kristie Farnham: Joined VEC in 2017

Kristie is the Director of Business Support within ACCD’s Department of Economic Development. Her service with State Government began in April of 1999. Her primary work is in managing programs for the Department, specifically the Brownfields Revitalization Fund and the Northern Border Regional Commission. Kristie collaborates with Vermont municipalities, businesses, nonprofits, governmental entities, regional partners and other stakeholders to advance economic and community development efforts.

Per VEC’s bylaws, “One seat of the Board shall be reserved for the Secretary of [ACCD] or his/her designated alternative.” Kristie currently serves in this position on VEC’s Board.

Joseph Hayes: Joined VEC in 2006

Joe is Operations Manager and Principal Scientist at ATLAS, an infrastructure and environmental solutions company located in Williston, VT. As Operations Manager, Joe oversees activities of the ATLAS Williston team including environmental investigation, remediation and Brownfield services, environmental permitting and compliance, industrial hygiene and building science services, water system operators, and OSHA training classes. Joe is a licensed professional geologist and has served as an expert witness and provided technical support on environmental litigation cases involving petroleum fuel hydrocarbon and manufactured gas plant operations. Joe’s remediation experience has ranged from large-scale excavation projects, multi-phase extraction systems, surfactant flushing, bioremediation, chemical oxidation, various injection technologies, and impermeable and permeable reactive walls. Joe’s more recent work has involved investigation and treatment of emerging contaminants primarily per- and polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and serves on ATLAS’ Emerging Contaminant team, which is currently focusing on PFAS.

Laurie Grigg: Joined VEC in 2020

Laurie is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Norwich University where she teaches classes in Intro. to Geology, Oceanography, GIS, Freshwater Ecosystems, Energy and the Environment and conducts research with students and collaborators.  Her research focuses on the reconstruction of past climate and ecosystems in Vermont since deglaciation.  More recently, she has examined past linkages between changes in lake productivity, erosion, and climate. 

Joshua Robinson: Joined VEC in 2020

Josh is a Project and Business Line Manager in Fuss & O’Neill’s Environment and Facility Services Business Line. He has managed and served as Project Manager on a wide range of environmental projects throughout New England and New York, including those on Brownfield sites, for residential and commercial developments, as part of roadway and transportation improvements, and at industrial facilities. He has participated in and overseen geotechnical analyses, environmental investigations, remedy implementation, project planning, and permitting activities. He has experience working with regulators, project stakeholders, subcontractors, as well as both internal and external project teams to provide efficient and thorough solutions for private entities, municipal clients, and non-profit organizations. Josh is passionate about advocating for Vermont’s environmental business sector and continuously seeks to work on projects that protect and improve Vermont’s built environment. 

Quin Mann: Joined VEC in 2021

Quin is a District Coordinator with the NRB, an independent state government entity that oversees the administration of Act 250, Vermont’s land use and development law. As a District Coordinator, Quin works with applicants, State agencies, and the District Commissions to coordinate the Act 250 permitting process. Quin has extensive experience working with Vermont municipalities, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and other stakeholders to meet environmental requirements in concert with economic and community development priorities. Quin started her career with the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development (ACCD) supporting National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance for federally funded housing and economic development projects. She has also worked for a small environmental consulting firm where her work focused on NEPA compliance and policy for multiple federal agencies. Quin also currently serves as Vice Chair for the South Burlington Development Review Board.

Peter Murray: Joined VEC in 1999

Peter manages the Regional Sales and Service Center for Geotech in Winooski, Vermont. We provide private sector and local, state and federal government clients with equipment used in investigations and remediation of soil and groundwater contamination and in investigations conducted to develop and protect sources of drinking water. Peter has over 35 years of experience in the environmental services and technology sector. He was the first VEC President, elected in 2000.

Paul Quackenbush: Joined VEC in 2024

Paul is an attorney with SRH Law in Burlington. His legal practice focuses on energy, environmental, and land-use law, green marketing, and civil litigation. He represents clients in matters before state and federal courts, the Vermont Public Utility Commission, and other state and local permitting authorities. Paul graduated first in his class from Vermont Law School in 2021, where he was an environmental mission scholar and received the environmental law scholarship. His legal work is informed by his technical background, having worked as an environmental remediation consultant and earned a master’s in geological sciences prior to law school. Paul also serves as a youth mentor with the King Street Center.

Daniel Voisin: Joined VEC in 2016

Dan is a Senior Geologist and Director of the Environmental Assessment and Remediation service line at Stone Environmental.  Dan’s primary area of expertise is brownfield redevelopment specializing in environmental assessment, remediation, and redevelopment of complex properties. Dan started his career at Stone twenty years ago splitting his time between being an analytical chemist and field geologist as part of Stone’s high-resolution site characterization team traveling to sites across the country and abroad before turning his attention to challenges closer to home. Dan is an avid skier, runner, and mountain biker volunteering his time to groom trails and coach running and Nordic skiing in Montpelier.

Miles Waite: Joined VEC in 2008

Miles has been working in the environmental consulting industry for over thirty years. He is the owner and Principal Hydrogeologist of Waite-Heindel Environmental Management and oversees all company operations. A portion of his work load includes clean water hydrogeology, where his areas of expertise include hydrogeologic investigations, water supply siting and permitting, wastewater system design and permitting, stormwater flow and drainage studies, and land development (Act 250) permitting. He is just as frequently involved in contaminant projects, where he conducts environmental site assessments, Brownfields site assessments and contaminated site redevelopment, contaminated soil and groundwater management, remediation system design and installation, soil vapor intrusion evaluations, indoor air quality testing, and air sampling for PCBs in schools and commercial buildings. Miles has a long history with VEC, including as President from 2015-2021. Miles is also involved with several other professional organizations and sits on several boards.
